Two types of blood pressure medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) equally control blood pressure, according to a report issued by the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research. In analyzing 61 studies, researchers found that ACE inhibitors such as captropril (Capoten) are slightly more likely than ARBs such as losartan (Cozaar) to cause a harmless but persistent dry cough, but in terms of effectiveness, the drugs worked equally well. Neither drug appears to have an effect on lipids, heart function, or diabetes. It is also unknown whether ACE inhibitors and ARBs differ when it comes to long-term benefits and risks. However, ACE inhibitors are available in generic form, which makes them less expensive. So if cost is an issue, an ACE inhibitor may be for you.
