Need
Heart failure is a prevalent and morbid chronic disease that occurs in stages. Progression through these stages can be slowed with optimal medical therapy. Initial workup for patients with newly diagnosed heart failure is directed at identifying the underlying cause of left ventricular dysfunction. An assessment of hemodynamic status can be used to direct therapy. Standard treatment includes angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and beta blockers. Newer therapies include aldosterone antagonists, angiotensin receptor blockers, and digoxin.
